Our generous host, Eric, and his family had to evacuate their home. All’s well with them now. :-) Glad to hear that.

First day of the walk at Ft. Baker, California
We’ve grown together like a family that in three days will disperse. But we won’t be leaving empty handed. Each one of us has picked up something unique from this journey.
What have I picked up? (besides the poison ivy? lol) Too much to say in the minute I have before it’s time to leave for our walk.
I do know that my eyes have been opened even wider to all the possibilities in life. I look forward to sitting down with you over tea or coffee (or wine or beer) and talking story.But for now, it’s time to get crackin’!!!

Raja was our leader; she always makes a very good leader.
The wind picked up the closer we got to Guadalupe; by the time we got there, I was holding on to more than just my hat!
A few of us went AWOL and ate lunch in an incredibly delicious (and authentic, I think) Mexican restaurant. I later found out that Rachel had prepared a LOT of food for us. Sorry, Rachel!!! But I have to honestly say that whenever I can get Mexican food in this part of the world, I do! I really love the stuff.

And that we did! Each in their own way (such as hanging out at Avila Hot Springs or Avila town and beach or staying at the campground at Pismo Beach State Park).
It was so great to be able to meet Terrylene Saccetti, or TL, as everyone called her (by her name sign). She and her daughter heard about the walk and wanted to come visit and show their support. I think ALL of the walkers, volunteers, and organizers were touched by their presence. : )

Day 20 was a fun day of walking with our new leader, Michael. Though we walked on the highway some, we were mostly on quiet roads with very little traffic.
We reached our new camp site in time for lunch and even had time to head to town, San Luis Obispo. This is when I hung out at a cute cafe, bello mundo, and got caught up on some blog glob posting.
Enjoy the rest of your Memorial Day Weekend! We’re still hanging at Congregation B’nai B’rith in Santa Barbara and will resume walking on Monday the 27th of May. The Walk for ASL is slowly winding down . . . we’ll be arriving at the Santa Monica pier (by the carnival area) on Thursday the 30th at NOON. See you there!

Sunday, May 19th felt festive. We walked only around 4-miles from one Morro State Park to another. The walk was shortened because nearly everyone wanted to go inland to meet and hang out with part of the deaf community. It was some kind of a fundraiser, I was told. The drive took around 30-minutes, and it was decidedly warmer than on the coast. It reminded me of a Kauai KORE day (look for pictures of our dog, Rocket Girl, when you visit the site ;~) — an eclectic mix of people hanging out and enjoying each other’s company. I heard speaking and not speaking, saw signing and not signing. It was really a nice MIX of people.
The evening ended with the usual gathering around the fire talking story and discussion Alison’s question of the day. : )

We started out with almost everyone participating. At first we were on the highway, but we then managed to get on a really nice coastline path. After passing through a beautiful oceanfront neighborhood, we found ourselves once again on the highway. At that point, part of the crew scattered. Lunch somehow magically brought everyone back together. : ) By the end of the day, there were only 5 of us who completed the entire 23.6-mile walk, our longest one so far (at that point).
During our long walk, we discovered a really cute town, Cayucos. If you’ve never been there, I recommend checking it out. Like Cambria, it’s full of touristy stuff, but in a non-tacky kind of way.
After about 8-hours of walking, we joined the others and camped at Morro Strand State Park. The camping site itself isn’t too spectacular (no showers), but the view of the rock IS! Check out our evening sunset shoot; I think you’ll be impressed.

We broke down camp like usual, but this time we all poured ourselves into a vehicle and made a stop at another Big Sur Park not too far away (for a short hike to Pfeiffer Falls).
In the late afternoon, we set-up camp 56-miles south of Carmel at Limekiln State Park; this was such a striking setting under the super HIGH bridge. Nearly all of us took our dinner to the beach so we could enjoy watching the crashing surf and bird play on the water (they too were having their evening meal). The warm sand felt so good after the cold nights and mornings we’ve been having. There wasn’t a LOT of space for our tents, so we shared and let our “solo” tents take a breather.
